So you're a new leader - Here is where you start
Courses are available in the e-Learning section of my.scouting.org . A login is required, but anyone may create a user account and view the courses. Registered members of the BSA may provide their member numbers (as part of the user profile) to receive credit.

Boy Scout Leader Training Requirements - here

Committee Member

Scoutmaster or Assistant Scoutmaster
  • Youth Protection - helps you learn how to keep our youth safe.

  • Scoutmaster Specific - Following New Leader Essentials training, this course is phase two of a new Scoutmaster's introduction to the responsibilities, opportunities, and resources that will ensure a successful troop leadership experience.
  • Intro to Outdoor Leader Skills - Providing leaders with basic outdoor skills information. Given over one to two and a half days, it may include an overnight camping experience. Course emphasizes skills and may be accelerated by demonstrating mastery of specific skills. Skills taught are based on those found in The Boy Scout Handbook with emphasis on skills that build confidence and competence in leaders conducting outdoor experiences. Subjects covered include: flag etiquette, plant identification, packing and hiking techniques, map and compass, cooking and first aid.

Skills Instructor Program
  • The council needs instructors to teach skills to other volunteer leaders and parents at the Golden-Burke Scout Center. Instructors can teach mandatory trainings or a personal interest course of his or her choice.

Wood Badge
  • Wood Badge is the highest level of Scout leadership training and provides participants with the tools to be a well-rounded leader. The leadership skills taught are for volunteers from all Scouting areas.

University of Scouting
  • Every Scout deserves a trained leader. The University of Scouting, the premier training event in the council, is one of the easiest ways for adult volunteers to achieve this goal. This single-day training event is designed to supplement any leader's training. Any Scout leader may attend. 

​Junior Leader Training
  • For newly elected Troop and Patrol leaders, offered biannually
  • Learn about SMART goals & setting goals for leadership positions in the troop along with guidance from an adult mentor

Den Chief
  • One of the best helpers for a Cub Scout Den Leader or Webelos Leader is a Den Chief, a Boy Scout who can help with activities, advancement, ceremonies, crafts, and other den events. But the best Den Chief is one who has attended Den Chief Training to learn about games, songs, tricks, puzzles, and other things that help a Den Chief do a better job. National Youth Leadership Training
  • ​NYLT is an action-packed program designed to provide Scouts with leadership skills and experience they can use in their home units and in other situations demanding leadership of self and others. 
  • First class Scouts (at least 13 years old) with a key leadership role, and Scoutmaster approval may sign up.
  • ​For scheduled times and locations, check the Council website.​

Cyber Chip
  • ​The Cyber Chip must be earned (requirement #6) for the Scout rank, but may be earned by any Scout.

  • Start the NetSmartz program here
  • All Cyber Chips will expire annually. Each Scout will need to "recharge" the chip by going back to the NetSmartz Recharge area.
